Gardening 101 – Getting Started Growing Vegetables and Herbs in Amherst
Offered in cooperation with the Master Gardeners of Western Massachusetts

Everyone is Welcome – Free!
Learn how to get started selecting a site, preparing the soil, planting and basic garden care, including container gardens, raised beds and “lasagna” gardens. Also free soil tests!
Other topics include:
- How to start a garden cheaply and easily
- How to get the most out of your garden space
- Getting help deciding which vegetables to grow
- Deciding where and when and how to plant
- The “secret” of mulch!

The Annual Amherst Sustainability Festival
Downtown Commons; 10:00am – 4:00pm
Grow Food Amherst will have a table display at the Amherst Sustainability Festival. We could use a few volunteers to greet people and share your enthusiasm for growing food! If you are willing to sign up for a 2-hour shift please sign up here: Volunteer Sign-up. We will contact you with instructions prior to the event.
If you are willing to help out with any of the following volunteer work that needs to be done, please sign up on the sheets linked below:
General Festival setup and/or take down – 8-10am shift and 4pm-5pm shift
Greeting people at the Grow Food Amherst table – two hour shifts from 10am to 4pm
Greeting people at the All Things Local table – two hour shifts from 10am to 4pm
Greeting people at the Transitions Amherst table – two hour shifts from 10am to 4pm

Outdoor Living Classroom Gardening Workshop at the UMass Permaculture Garden
1:00 pm – 3:00pm
Franklin Dining Commons Permaculture Garden at UMass
Grow Food Amherst in partnership with the UMass Sustainability Initiative is hosting an Outdoor Living Classroom at the UMass Permaculture Garden. Get your hands dirty and celebrate spring! Come with your gardening questions to the Permaculture Garden in front of the Franklin Dining Common at UMass. Varoius stations with demonstrations and interactive workshops on compost, seeding and transplanting, sheet mulching (the “lasagna” garden) and more. All ages welcome!
